To measure each resolver, your browser sends encrypted DoH lookups straight to it (Cloudflare, Google, Quad9 and the others), so those providers' own privacy policies apply to the queries. The response times are shown only to you. The one thing sent back to us is an anonymous tally of which resolver won, which feeds the statistic below.

What This Test Measures

Each resolver is timed on a full DNS-over-HTTPS round trip from your browser: the request travels to the resolver, it looks the name up, and the answer comes back over HTTPS. Because that includes the TLS and HTTP overhead of a web request, the numbers are higher than a raw DNS query on your device, but they are measured the same way for every resolver, so the comparison between them stays fair.

We only report a time when the browser can read the response and confirm it is a real, successful lookup (a valid answer record, not an error). Resolvers that block cross-origin browser requests are listed as unavailable instead of being given an invented number. That leaves fewer resolvers in the table, but every millisecond you see is backed by a real answer.

How to Use a Faster Resolver

Once you know which resolver is quickest for you, you can set it on your device or router. The change is reversible and does not affect your IP address or location. It only changes who answers your name lookups.

  • On most systems you set a resolver's IP addresses in your network or Wi-Fi settings.
  • For encrypted DoH specifically, modern browsers and operating systems have a "secure DNS" setting where you can paste the resolver's DoH URL.
  • Setting it on your router applies the change to every device on the network at once.

A different resolver can also change which content filtering or malware blocking you get, so pick one whose policy you trust, not only the fastest.

There is no single winner: it depends on where you are and how your network routes to each resolver. A resolver with a nearby edge server usually wins. That is why this test runs from your browser. The ranking you see is specific to your connection right now, rather than a global average.
Does a faster DNS resolver make my internet faster?
It does not raise your bandwidth, but it can make browsing feel snappier. DNS lookups happen before a connection can start, and a slow or distant resolver adds a visible delay to the first visit to each new domain. A faster resolver trims that lookup time; once a name is cached, the difference disappears until the cache expires.
Why are some resolvers shown as unavailable?
This test only reports a time when it can read and verify a real DNS answer in the browser, which requires the resolver to allow cross-origin (CORS) requests. A resolver that blocks browser requests is marked unavailable rather than given a fabricated number. It may still work fine when configured system-wide on your device.
